About Sir Peter Blake

Sir Peter Blake was born in Dartford, Kent in 1932 and studied at the Royal College of Art in London. He became one of the leading figures of the British pop art movement in the 1950s and 60s, and his collage-based work drew on popular culture, music, wrestling, fairgrounds and found imagery in ways that predated and influenced a generation of artists.

Blake is best known for co-designing the sleeve for The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967, but his work with musicians runs far deeper than a single cover. He designed artwork for The Who's Face Dances, the Band Aid and Live Aid campaigns, The Pentangle, Ian Dury and many others. His 1991 Alphabet Set and ongoing series of portraits and collages remain widely collected.

He was elected a Royal Academician in 1981 and knighted in 2002 for his services to art. His work is held in the Tate, the V&A, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and major collections worldwide.

We hold a significant collection of Sir Peter Blake signed prints and works, including pieces from the Sgt Pepper, Face Dances, Band Aid, Live Aid and 1991 Alphabet portfolios. Contact us to ask about availability or to arrange a viewing at The Studio Gallery in Henley-on-Thames.
